About the event
Slow Roll Cleveland will ride in celebration of Juneteenth on the official holiday this year!
Come join us at Luke Easter Park. Parking is available in the lot next to the Zelma Watson George Recreation facility. We will ride together in celebration of African American freedom.
The ride, led by members of Juneteenth Freedom Riders, will take you on a tour that highlights Black history and achievement in Cleveland, with a special emphasis this year on Carl Stokes, Zelma Watson George, Luke Easter and Dollree Mapp. Handouts will be available with QR codes to learn more about the historical areas experienced during the ride.
Gather beginning at 6 pm at the open field across Martin Luther King Boulevard from the Zelma Watson George Recreation Center; look for the Slow Roll Cleveland booth and squad members in safety yellow.
Our Juneteenth rides began in 2018 and since then have hosted hundreds of riders who have been both entertained and educated along routes designed to reveal sometimes seemingly obscure bits of local history that remind us that Black history IS American history, and that the experience of our local communities is a vibrant living document worth preserving and learning from.
We were thrilled to see swarms of riders show up two weeks ago for our Pride Ride adorned with rainbow-colored gear, capes and flags and we started thinking: wouldn't it be cool if we could do something similar for Juneteenth? Next Monday, show your local Juneteenth spirit and power to the world by flying the colors of the African Diaspora: red, black and green.
