About the event

Whiskey Island isn't really an island -- it's a peninsula created almost 200 years ago when the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal caused the Cuyahoga's mouth to be moved a little ways to the east. The move resulted in approximately 80 acres of land cut off from the rest of the city.

Over the years the "island" has hosted an iron works, a 22-street neighborhood settled almost entirely by Irish immigrants, a distillery, Cleveland second hospital (constructed during a cholera epidemic), a salt mine, an ore-unloading dock dominated by four massive Hulett loaders (the remains of which can still be seen today), a Coast Guard station, a marina, a pleasant urban park and now, this Monday, Slow Roll Cleveland will once again return for a two-hour cruise.

We'll set up on the east side of the park, near the new Whiskey Island Bridge that crosses into the Flats. There's parking on the east side of the park and a larger parking lot on the west end of Wendy Park; if you arrive on the later side, you're best off using the west parking and taking a short roll over to the starting point. Once again, we'll gather at 6 PM, with t-shirts for sale and 50/50 raffle tickets, with the ride setting out at 7 PM.

This will be our last Monday ride for two weeks; we'll ride the following Saturday (July 1) out of Slavic Village (hosted by the Polish-American Cultural Center -- look for details on that event later this week) and then take the following Monday off.
