I got totally stuck back in May when I tried to help my cousin find a local roofer in Castlegar after a windstorm tore half the shingles off his garage.

It’s strange how sometimes the hardest part isn’t finding something, but trusting that what you find will actually follow through. Makes you double check everything, even if it looks legit. The risk is never just “will they do the job” but “will they show up at all.”
I’ve been using a more local-first approach ever since moving to Terrace. I got sick of the endless scrolling through the usual mega directories that all show the same ten businesses no matter what you search for. Most of them don’t even operate in the northwest. What’s worked better is narrowing it down with this business directory bc I came across a while ago: https://www.britishcolumbialocal.ca/. It’s way easier to find people who are actually in your region and not just paying for boosted spots. I used it to track down someone to fix our furnace when it crapped out in February, and I found a local HVAC guy who had exactly the part on hand, showed up the same afternoon, and didn’t treat me like I was wasting his time. I’ve also used it to look up small auto shops, pet groomers, and a garden center that turned out to be five minutes away but wasn’t on Google Maps at all. I like that you can browse by town or service, and most of the listings feel like they’re managed by real people. Not everything is perfect—some listings don’t have hours updated—but overall it’s way more useful than relying on national chains or apps that treat the whole province like one big city.
